How to care for dry hair?

Just like skin, there are different hair types with specific needs. Today, we're going to talk about dry hair, help you understand why it's dry, and give you some tips for caring for it naturally.

All our tips for taking care of dry hair naturally

Why is my hair dry?

Some hair types are naturally drier than others. This is particularly true for curly, frizzy, and coily hair. Sebum has difficulty spreading throughout the hair fiber, as the latter doesn't have a shape that facilitates the process. It's important to know that sebum is secreted naturally and its mission is to nourish, moisturize, and protect hair from external aggressions.

So you understand why hair lacking sebum (yes, which on the contrary produces too much sebum that is poorly distributed on the hair fiber) is drier than other hair.

There are, of course, other reasons why hair is drier, and the treatments we put it through can be the culprit. Chemical coloring, straightening, blow-drying, and repeated straightening all change the nature of the hair. It has difficulty maintaining moisture.
Pollution, the water we use, or the sun are not without consequences.

How to recognize dry hair?

If your hair feels dry to the touch even after your treatments, if it's damaged and brittle, you probably have dry hair. It's generally more difficult to style and manage. You'll need to adapt your routine to pamper it and make it softer.

What routine should you choose when you have dry hair?

The key word: gentleness. To care for dry hair, you need to choose a gentle routine and treatments that won't damage or dry out your hair. This routine should be hydrating, nourishing, and strengthening.

The shampoo

Dry hair doesn't like daily washing. Washing your hair too often can strip away its natural sebum. Shampooing once a week is more than enough. Make sure to choose gentle, non-drying cleansing products. We recommend sulfate-free shampoos, no-poo shampoos, or cleansing creams.

The conditioner

If your hair needs detangling, conditioner is a must. It will help gently remove all knots and coat your hair fibers at the same time. As with shampoo, choose a gentle, sulfate-free detangler (yes, sulfates are found in many conditioners). Once applied to damp hair, detangle in portions and rinse.

The mask

Remember when we told you that dry hair needed pampering? It's one of the most important steps in your hair care routine. A hair mask will deeply nourish your hair and fill in any gaps.
Choose masks specifically for dry hair, often rich in oils or butters. Commercial masks for dry hair contain very few natural ingredients and often contain silicones. We recommend reading the ingredients carefully.

And if you don't find what you're looking for, make your own treatments with natural bases to personalize. Leave it on especially on the lengths and ends (the scalp doesn't need a mask), under a heat source for at least 30 minutes for better action (heated helmet, hot towel, etc.).

Drying

To dry your hair without damaging it, there's nothing like air drying, but we don't all have time for that. You can use the hairdryer on the cool setting because the heat can dry it out.

To complete your routine, and if your hair craves it, you can moisturize and nourish it daily. A leave-in moisturizer followed by a vegetable oil will help keep your hair soft and supple. For frizzy hair, you can add a butter to seal in the moisture.

Some tips for dry hair

During your hair care routine, remember to rinse your hair with lukewarm water, or even cold water for the more adventurous. Water that's too hot will strip away natural sebum and therefore make your hair drier.

To neutralize limescale from your hair, use a mixture of cider vinegar and water for your final rinse (2 tablespoons of vinegar in 1/2 liter of water). Your hair will also be shinier.

When styling your hair, be sure to choose products that do not contain alcohol. Alcohol is very drying, and applying it daily to your hair will only dry it out.
Protect your hair from the cold, the sun's rays, and even while you sleep. Friction on traditional pillowcases makes hair drier. We recommend sleeping with a satin bonnet, and if you don't find that glamorous, opt for a satin pillowcase.
