What is cold saponification? Saponification is a chemical reaction between two elements: A fatty substance (the oil and butter making up soap) and an alkali (lye). During this process, the oil and lye disappear to form soap and glycerin. The chemical reaction only stops when one of the two components is exhausted. Superfatted soap is soap produced by a saponification process in which the lye is used up first. Cold saponification is a slow process that preserves all the properties of the soap's natural ingredients. What is superfatting? Now that you know what saponification is, it's easy to understand what superfatting is. It's the proportion of oil that is not saponified, and therefore remains in the soap as oil. It's this superfatting that brings softness and nutrition to the skin. So there's no feeling of tightness or dry skin after using the soap. The expertise of our local Master soapmaker B. Marzal, founder of Ev'Savon and holder of a Master soapmaker certificate, works alongside us to design and produce our range of solid soaps by hand and locally. All our soaps are handmade in France, in small quantities to ensure exemplary product quality.
