The niaouli is part of the Myrtaceae family. Planted in many tropical areas, it is native to Australia and New Caledonia. This shrub is 15 to 20 m tall. The Niaouli reproduces very quickly and can grow 1 to 2 meters per year. Its leaves are dark green, and its white flowers can tend towards yellow. It is the leaves of Niaouli which are picked to extract the essential oil.
