What is Jojoba oil?

It's not just an oil, it's liquid gold!

This golden vegetable oil with ultra-nourishing properties protects the skin and slows the appearance of wrinkles. Strictly speaking, jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax. It is rich in esters and monounsaturated fatty acids. As such, it belongs to the wax category. What's more, this oil is not saponifiable.

Jojoba oil, obtained by cold-pressing jojoba seeds, also brings shine, suppleness and strength to even the driest hair. Dry and non-greasy, it contains over 80% monounsaturated fatty acids (omega 9), giving it exceptional healing and repairing properties.

It deeply restructures the skin and regulates sebum production, making it the perfect ally for combination to oily skin.
What makes it special? It's the closest vegetable oil to human sebum!

History, origin and cultivation of jojoba

The Mexican Indians are known to have been the first to use Jojoba. Jojoba seeds were also used in their diet. Consumed raw, they were also used to produce a beverage quite similar to the coffee we know today.

As forJojoba oil, it was prized for its medicinal virtues:Jojoba oil helps to heal wounds. A miracle worker, it was also prized at the time for preserving the beauty of skin and hair. Because of the hot, sunny climate, skin and hair were under attack, andjojoba oil helped to protect them.

Hair was very important to the Indians. As a symbol of strength, power and courage, beautiful hair was highly prized. It was also used to communicate with the spirits.Jojoba oil ensured strong, healthy hair.

The commercialization of jojoba oil

The democratization of jojoba oil came about thanks to circumstances that were initially rather... negative. In 1971, whale oil and blubber used in cosmetics (lipsticks, for example) were banned along with whaling.

Some time earlier, two American researchers, Ford and Green, carried out a study and found significant physico-chemical similarities between whale oil and jojoba oil. Jojoba oil replaced whale oil in cosmetics. It began to be exported and used worldwide.

The tree and its characteristics

Measuring up to 2.5m in height, it is often found in arid, sunny areas. It grows in North America (Arizona) and Mexico. When it blooms between March and May, pretty yellow flowers appear at the end of its branches.

Jojoba produces seeds, also known as beans or almonds. Jojoba seeds are oval, olive-sized and brown in color. They are harvested in autumn, when they fall to the ground. Jojoba is sometimes called "sheep nut", as it has long been used to feed goats and sheep. But it's also known as "Inca gold". And with good reason! Long ago, the Incas recognized the richness of jojoba and, more specifically, its oil.

As for Jojoba's foliage, you can imagine leaves resembling those found on an olive tree.

Oval and elongated, these leaves are hairy. This prevents water from evaporating. Indeed, since the shrub grows in dry, arid areas, it could easily struggle to obtain water.

To remedy this problem, Jojoba can of course rely on its roots. Anchored in the soil, these long roots (around 30m in length) rotate and draw water from deep beneath the ground. First, a 10m-long taproot forms. Next, lateral roots form all around it. Finally, fine secondary roots develop close to the surface. Together, they ensure Jojoba's water supply and storage. Thanks to these characteristics, the tree can last up to 1.5 years without water, living solely on its reserves! Some researchers are particularly interested in this tree as a means of revegetating desert areas, where it grows and survives with ease.

Jojoba in figures

  • 50 years: That's how long jojoba lasts.
  • 25 years: The number of years jojoba oil can be stored without deterioration.
  • 1836: It was in this year that botanist Linke discovered Jojoba. He mistakenly named it "Buxus chinesis", even though the plant originated in the western United States, not China. The plant was later renamed "Simmondsia chinesis".

How do I obtain jojoba oil?

How do we obtain this famous liquid gold?

Unlike its counterparts, this vegetable oil is very easy to extract. First cold-press extraction is all that's needed to collect the yellow wax. The precious oil is harvested from jojoba seeds. It doesn't oxidize, and it keeps very well because it's entirely pure and natural. This liquid wax is yellow-gold in color and absolutely odorless.

Extraction by first cold pressing

This mechanical extraction method involves pressing oleaginous fruits or seeds to extract the oil. Unlike multiple pressing, which requires the raw material to be heated and pressed several times, first cold pressing ensures optimum oil quality.

What makes Jojoba oil so special?

Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax, not a vegetable oil. It is distinguished by its composition, which is naturally very similar to human sebum.
