The botanical minute
The coconut palm belongs to the palm family, with a sharp stipe (false trunk). An adult coconut palm tree can bear between 50 and 500 nuts over a period of fifteen years. Coconuts can measure up to 30cm in diametre, and are smooth, ranging in colour from green to orange. When ripe, it is covered with a thick layer of brown woody fibres. The solid, more or less spherical shell protects an edible whitish kernel.
